The Musang King durian, also referred to as "Mao Shan Wang" in Chinese, traces its roots to the 1980s in Gua Musang, Kelantan, Malaysia. Originally known as "Raja Kunyit," meaning "Turmeric King" due to its deep yellow flesh, it was discovered by Tan Lai Fook from Raub, Pahang. He grafted a branch from the original tree, leading to the widespread cultivation of this variety. The name "Musang King" is derived from its place of origin, Gua Musang, with "Musang" also referring to the Asian palm civet in Malay.
In recent years, Musang King has become a significant agricultural export for Malaysia, especially to markets in China, where it is sometimes referred to as the "Hermes of durian" due to its premium status. This surge in demand has led to increased cultivation efforts and has positioned Musang King as a vital contributor to the local economy.
